Palestinian President Highlights Humanitarian Crisis, Generations Are Being Wiped Out in Gaza

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed world leaders at the UN General Assembly on Thursday, condemning Israel for its ongoing crimes and atrocities in Gaza. He emphasized that the Palestinian people would not abandon their ancestral homeland and called for the suspension of Israel’s UN membership until it fulfills its obligations under international law.

“Palestine will remain ours. If anyone is to leave, it will be the occupying usurpers,” Abbas declared, eliciting loud applause from the audience.

He opened his remarks by detailing the suffering of Palestinians, describing nearly a year of what he termed “one of the most heinous crimes of our time.”

“It is a full-scale war of genocide that Israel is conducting, resulting in over 40,000 martyrs in Gaza alone, with thousands still trapped under the rubble. More than 100,000 individuals have been injured to date,” he stated.

Abbas noted that entire families had been wiped out, their names completely erased from existence. He highlighted the dire humanitarian situation, mentioning the spread of diseases, scarcity of clean water and essential medicines, and the displacement of over two million Palestinians, many of whom have fled multiple times in search of safety.

“The death toll and injuries continue without pause, not just in Gaza but also in the West Bank and Jerusalem,” he added.

The Palestinian leader asserted that he was not speaking to counter the “lies” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who claimed before the US Congress in July that Israeli forces had not killed innocent civilians in Gaza.

“I ask you, who is responsible for the deaths of more than 15,000 children among the 40,000 killed, as well as an equal number of women and elderly individuals? Who continues to carry out these killings?” he questioned.

Abbas urged for Israel’s United Nations membership to be frozen due to its refusal to accept a two-state resolution to the conflict and its denial of the right of Palestinian refugees to return home.

“Israel, which disregards United Nations resolutions, does not deserve to be a member of this international organization,” he stated.

He announced that Palestine would submit an application to the UN General Assembly regarding this matter, asserting that Israel has historically failed to meet the conditions of its UN membership.

“The first condition was that Israel accept Resolution 181,” he remarked, referring to the UN’s 1947 partition plan, which proposed the division of the territory that had been part of mandatory Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states.
