Historically, Pakistan’s tourism industry has struggled due to limited government support, a lack of regulatory framework, and inadequate infrastructure. However, the establishment of the Green Tourism Company, backed by SIFC, marks a significant turnaround. This company is revitalizing neglected government resorts, incurring annual expenses exceeding a billion rupees.
The initiative aims to elevate Pakistan’s standing as a tourism-friendly destination through collaborative efforts, involving provincial support and the development of robust service infrastructure for short-term projects and a sustainable environment for long-term projects.
In its initial phase, Green Tourism Company has earmarked 20 locations nationwide for development, with 25% of these sites situated in Gilgit-Baltistan, attracting an investment of PKR 3 billion.
Under this initiative, 35% of the profits generated will be allocated to the government of Gilgit-Baltistan, while 20% will be reinvested in tourism promotion. This project is also poised to create direct employment opportunities for local communities, further bolstering the region’s economic development.
