Pakistan’s Internet Infrastructure Struggles with Persistent Disruptions
Pakistan-The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has acknowledged that the country has faced multiple internet service disruptions over the past five years, with several occurring this year alone.
An official document recently released highlights the persistent issues affecting Pakistan’s internet infrastructure, frequently due to submarine cable failures.
The PTA’s report reveals that internet services were interrupted four times across Pakistan in 2024. Earlier this year, a land cable cut in Egypt in February had a notable impact on internet services in the country.
The most recent disruption, which happened on June 17, was caused by a fault in a submarine cable near Karachi. The PTA expects repairs to be completed by September 24. Another significant outage occurred on July 31 due to a problem within the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) system, leading to nationwide service disruptions.

From August 17 to 27, internet services were again interrupted due to an issue with the Asia Africa Europe-3 (AAE-3) submarine cable. This follows a similar incident in April 2023 when an earth cable cut in France resulted in widespread internet problems.
The document also recounts incidents from previous years. In November 2022, a ground cable cut in Egypt caused major disruptions, while a malfunction in the TW1 cable in Karachi in February 2022 led to a three-month internet outage. Additionally, a cut in the UAE’s main land cable, AAE-1, in December 2021 affected internet services for several hours. Earlier, in February 2021, another ground cable cut in Egypt led to significant connectivity issues.
