Nooh Dastgir Butt brought home Pakistan’s first gold in the +109kg weighlifting event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games later on Wednesday night.
Nooh earlier told that he wanted to do one better than Bronze from his last outing at the Commonwealth Games But he did delivered better than expected to lift 173kgs in snatch and 232kgs in clean and jerk both Commonwealth Games records, to finish with a total of 405kgs.“I have to win a medal, better than bronze, for my father and my country,”Nooh had told He feels that defending a bronze medal is not good enough anymore.Meanwhile Pakistan opened its medal account in Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Wednesday as judoka Shah Hussain Shah downed his South African opponent to secure Bronze medal. Shah entered bronze medal bout after losing his first round earlier in the 90kg category. This was his first ever 90kg event as the Pakistani player has always played in the 100kg category. He was up against South Africa’s Thomas-Laszlo Breytnbach for the medal contest. After initial hiccups, Shah successfully downed his opponent to win the contest on ippon in less than three minutes. This is Pakistan’s first medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
