Pakistan urges political solution for lasting Libya stability

Pakistan stresses political process as key to Libya stability

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – At the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan reiterated its firm backing for Libya’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial unity, stressing that a Libyan-led political process remains the only sustainable route to peace.

During a briefing on the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, described Libya as a brotherly nation and acknowledged the UN Secretary-General’s report, which highlighted both progress and persistent challenges across political, security, and economic fronts.

He emphasized that meaningful political progress depends on resolving disagreements over elections. Key institutions, including the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, have yet to reach consensus on critical electoral matters such as restructuring the High National Elections Commission and finalizing the legal framework for elections. Pakistan expressed support for UNSMIL’s ongoing dialogue initiatives aimed at bridging these divides.

On the security front, Pakistan welcomed the relative calm in and around Tripoli, urging all Libyan stakeholders to maintain engagement and fully implement agreed security arrangements. Efforts to unify military and security institutions across eastern and western Libya were also acknowledged as a positive step.

Addressing the judicial dimension, Ambassador Asim noted continued cooperation among Libya’s legal bodies and endorsed the mediation work supported by UNSMIL. He said these initiatives demonstrate a collective commitment to maintaining judicial cohesion, strengthening constitutional mechanisms, and upholding the rule of law.

Highlighting the economic dimension, he described it as crucial for long-term peace. He welcomed a recent agreement among Libyan leaders on a unified spending framework, expressing optimism that it would enhance economic stability.

He also clarified that UN sanctions, particularly asset freezes, are designed to protect Libya’s resources rather than punish its people. He welcomed provisions under UN Security Council Resolution 2819 aimed at improving transparency and management of frozen assets, including coordination with the Libyan Investment Authority.

In closing, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners and Security Council members to support a peaceful, stable, and unified Libya through a Libyan-led process.
