Pakistan Removes Export Price Cap on Rice Amid Trade Adjustments
Move aims to align with recent policy changes by neighboring India.
Pakistan has lifted the floor price for rice exports, the country’s commerce ministry announced on Friday, following a similar decision by neighboring India.
In an official notification, the Ministry of Commerce stated that the minimum export price for rice, which had been in place since November, would be removed “with immediate effect.”
Earlier this month, India took a similar step, eliminating the floor price for basmati rice exports. This move was aimed at helping farmers burdened by debt and rising costs, allowing them to increase overseas sales of the premium rice variety just ahead of the new season’s harvest.
As the sole producers of basmati rice, both Pakistan and India strive to market this high-quality variety in a way comparable to the promotion of French Champagne or Darjeeling tea.
