Pakistan Railways Unveils Locally-Made High-Speed Wagons
The inauguration of these wagons signifies a pivotal move towards modernizing Pakistan’s rail infrastructure and enhancing its economic self-sufficiency.
LAHORE: Pakistan Railways has achieved a significant milestone by producing high-speed wagons for goods vehicles locally, capable of running at 100 km per hour.
The CEO of Pakistan Railways, Aamir Ali Baloch, inaugurated the new wagons at Lahore Cantt Railway Station, marking the addition of 40 high-capacity wagons to the railway fleet. These state-of-the-art wagons, designed with advanced Chinese technology, boast a load capacity of 70 tons and are engineered to transport containers efficiently.
By the end of the fiscal year 2025-26, Pakistan Railways plans to induct 820 such wagons, a move expected to save substantial foreign exchange by shifting manufacturing locally. This initiative is projected to boost annual income by over 9 billion rupees. “This marks a major step towards self-reliance,” stated CEO Railways Aamir Ali Baloch, highlighting the achievement of constructing these freight trains entirely within local workshops. With 140 freight vehicles already added, the plan is to produce approximately 820 more, which can cover their expenses within 8 to 10 months.
Baloch further elaborated on the financial prospects, revealing that the railway aims to generate more than 85 billion rupees in revenue, with 35 billion rupees coming solely from freight operations.
