Pakistan Railways Announces 20% Fare Reduction for Eid ul Fitr Travel

Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to Meet on March 30 for Shawwal Moon Sighting

LAHORE: In a bid to promote rail travel and offer relief to passengers during the festive season of Eid ul Fitr, Pakistan Railways (PR) has announced a 20% reduction in train fares. The discount will apply to all mail, express, and intercity trains for the first three days of Eid.

An official notification issued on Saturday stated that passengers making advance bookings will also benefit from the fare reduction. However, the discount will not be applicable to special Eid trains.

To ensure that passengers can fully benefit from this offer, Pakistan Railways has directed all booking offices to strictly adhere to the fare reduction during the specified period.

The move aims to provide financial relief and convenience to passengers traveling to their hometowns to celebrate Eid with their families.

Earlier this week, the federal government declared public holidays for Eid, granting a three-day break from Monday, March 31, to Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, along with zonal committees, is set to meet on Sunday evening, March 30, 2025 (corresponding to Ramazan 29, 1446 AH), to sight the Shawwal moon, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The meeting will be held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, where religious scholars, meteorological experts, and other stakeholders will discuss moon sighting reports to determine the official date for Eid ul Fitr celebrations across Pakistan. The beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal, along with other key events like Eid and Muharram, is determined based on the moon sighting.
