Pakistan Prepares for First High-Speed Rail Project

A $1.6 billion proposal for a high-speed rail link between Lahore and Rawalpindi has been sent to the Punjab chief minister for approval.

Preparations are in progress for Pakistan’s inaugural high-speed rail project, with a proposal for a Lahore-to-Rawalpindi link submitted to the Punjab chief minister’s office for approval.

The project is projected to cost approximately $1.6 billion and has been developed by the transport and mass transit departments. According to the proposal, the high-speed rail will allow trains to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, significantly cutting travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi to under two hours.

The proposal also highlights the need for an action plan based on a pre-feasibility study carried out by the railway department. This study will be funded by the Department of Planning and Development, as noted in the documents. However, obtaining upfront funding for this ambitious initiative poses a considerable challenge.

If the proposal receives approval, the high-speed rail project will represent a significant advancement in modernizing Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure, offering a rapid and efficient travel solution between these two major cities.
