Pakistan, Maldives Pledge to Boost Parliamentary Ties and Regional Cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, held an important meeting with Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the People’s Majlis of Maldives, during the latter’s official visit to Pakistan. The Maldivian Speaker arrived at the Parliament House along with his parliamentary delegation on a special invitation extended by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.

Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by the Speaker and other senior parliamentary officials. During the meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on enhancing bilateral parliamentary cooperation and discussed key regional and international developments.

Both Speakers reaffirmed their shared resolve to strengthen inter-parliamentary ties and deepen people-to-people contacts between the two nations. Ayaz Sadiq highlighted the cultural, historical, and religious commonalities between Pakistan and the Maldives, emphasizing the potential of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering peace and development across South Asia.

The Pakistani Speaker underlined the importance of resolving long-standing issues such as the Jammu & Kashmir and Palestine disputes for lasting regional peace. He condemned ongoing Indian atrocities in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and applauded the resilience of the Kashmiri people. He also praised Pakistan’s recent diplomatic and defense achievements on the international stage, attributing the success to national unity and the sacrifices of the Armed Forces.

Addressing broader regional concerns, Ayaz Sadiq warned against the Israeli agenda that, according to him, poses a threat to global peace. He called for Muslim unity in countering aggression and ensuring the protection of the legitimate rights of Palestinians and Kashmiris.

The Speaker also stressed the importance of regional cooperation through SAARC and pointed to Pakistan’s vast trade potential. He noted the vital role of the Pak-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in fostering stronger ties and facilitating collaborative initiatives.

In response, Abdul Raheem Abdulla expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He described Pakistan-Maldives relations as fraternal and grounded in mutual respect. He appreciated Pakistan’s consistent and principled positions on global issues, particularly Palestine and Kashmir, and expressed hope that enhanced parliamentary collaboration would further cement the bonds of friendship between the two countries.
