Pakistan Football Side Climbs in Latest FIFA Rankings

The latest FIFA update once again underscores the gap between global heavyweights and Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s men’s football team received a minor boost in the latest FIFA World Rankings following the recent update.

The Green Shirts have now broken into the top 200, climbing two spots to 199th place. Pakistan’s rise comes after the decline of Somalia and Gibraltar, giving Nolberto Solano’s side a small but notable lift on the global ladder.

Although the team’s current standing in FIFA rankings is a far cry from their historic best of 141st, it signals small victories for Pakistan as it looks to re-establish itself in the international arena. The two-place improvement is more symbolic than substantial, but it offers a glimmer of encouragement for a side that has long struggled for stability both on and off the pitch. With meaningful fixtures ahead, the challenge remains to build on these incremental gains.

Pakistan’s next test on the international stage will be against Afghanistan on October 9, as the two teams face off in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Afghanistan, currently ranked 161st in the world, will present another opportunity for the Green Shirts to make a case for further ranking improvements.

While Pakistan continues its long journey toward international competitiveness, the shake-up at the top of the rankings drew the most headlines. Spain has reclaimed the No. 1 spot for the first time in 11 years, overtaking both France and Argentina. The 2010 World Cup winners, enjoying a resurgence under Luis de la Fuente, now sit at the summit of world football.
