Pakistan Finalises High-Level Diplomatic Mission to U.S. Amid Rising Tensions with India

The Pakistani Foreign Office issued a strong statement urging the global community to take note of India’s escalating rhetoric.

ISLAMABAD: In response to escalating tensions with India, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a high-level diplomatic delegation to advocate Pakistan’s position on the international stage. The delegation, headed by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, is set to depart for the United States on June 2, with key engagements planned in New York and Washington.

Diplomatic sources confirm that the delegation’s visit will commence in New York, where they will hold a high-profile meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. The agenda will include discussions on the deteriorating security situation in South Asia, recent border clashes, and intensifying political hostilities with India.

Following their engagements at the UN, the delegation will proceed to Washington, where it will meet with senior officials from the Trump administration, members of the U.S. Congress, leading think tanks, and prominent media representatives. The mission aims to present Pakistan’s viewpoint on the recent Indo-Pakistan confrontation, convey its concerns over regional instability, and advocate for international mediation to de-escalate tensions.

A key issue to be raised is the potential suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty — a critical bilateral agreement between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. The delegation will highlight the serious security implications such a move could have for regional peace and environmental stability.

Meanwhile, tensions between the two nations continue to mount. On Monday, Pakistan condemned recent inflammatory remarks made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a speech in Gujarat, describing them as a “hate-driven invocation of violence” and an alarming display of rhetoric unbecoming of a leader of a nuclear state.

The Pakistani Foreign Office issued a strong statement urging the global community to take note of India’s escalating rhetoric. Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan criticized Modi’s speech as dangerously provocative, stating: “Delivered with the zeal of a campaign rally rather than the composure expected of a statesman, Prime Minister Modi’s comments set a worrying precedent in an already volatile region.”

Khan added that such statements contradict the principles of the United Nations Charter, which calls on member states to resolve disputes peacefully and respect the sovereignty and political independence of others.
