Pakistan Assumes Non-Permanent Membership of UNSC for the Eighth Time

New York: Pakistan’s national flag was installed at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as the country began its eighth term as a non-permanent member of the 15-member body for 2025-2026. The ceremony, held at the UN Headquarters in New York, saw the flags of the five new incoming non-permanent members — Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia — being raised at the UNSC’s stakeout.

The new members replaced Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms ended on December 31, 2024. Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, had the honor of installing the national flag during the ceremony.

Ambassador Ahmad emphasized that Pakistan would continue to uphold the UN Charter’s principles, focusing on maintaining international peace and security, supporting self-determination, and advancing friendly relations among nations. He reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to being a voice for oppressed peoples and its dedication to multilateral cooperation for addressing global challenges.

Pakistan’s role as a non-permanent member of the UNSC will involve actively working towards peaceful solutions on the Council’s agenda, utilizing various tools such as conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding to foster durable peace. The country will preside over the UNSC in July, setting the Council’s agenda, and will also have a seat on the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee.

The UNSC remains the most powerful body of the United Nations, with the authority to make legally binding decisions, impose sanctions, and authorize the use of force against states.
