Pak Ambassador to France applauds thln for outstanding contributions to literacy

France_Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Ambassador to France, has applauded the Himalayan Literacy Network (THLN) for its outstanding contributions to literacy. THLN was awarded the UNESCO King Sejong International Literacy Award at a ceremony held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on September 8, 2023.
The award recognizes THLN’s work in providing education to the nomadic Bakarwal community in the Southern Himalayas. The Bakarwals are a marginalized group with a low literacy rate. THLN’s innovative program has helped to improve literacy rates among the Bakarwals and has empowered them to play a more active role in society.
Ambassador Ahmad said that THLN’s work is “a best gift that can be offered to the youth of Pakistan.” He praised the organization’s commitment to providing quality education to all children, regardless of their background.
THLN was established in 2004 as a pilot project to provide primary education to the children of Bakarwals. The organization has since grown to reach over 1,000 students. THLN’s teachers are trained to work in remote areas and to adapt their teaching methods to the needs of the Bakarwal community.
The UNESCO King Sejong International Literacy Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of literacy. THLN’s award is a testament to the organization’s hard work and dedication to improving the lives of the Bakarwals.
In addition to applauding THLN, Ambassador Ahmad also met with Shahid Rehman, the representative of THLN, to discuss the organization’s work. Ambassador Ahmad expressed his support for THLN and pledged to continue working with the organization to promote literacy in Pakistan.
