Oxford Celebrates Eight Distinguished Honorands at Sheldonian Ceremony

LONDON: (Web Desk) – Oxford University Chancellor Lord Hague of Richmond has conferred honorary degrees on eight distinguished individuals in a ceremony held at the Sheldonian Theatre, marking one year since his inauguration as the 160th Chancellor of the University.

The ceremony reflects a longstanding Oxford tradition, where newly appointed Chancellors propose candidates for honorary degrees to recognize outstanding contributions to society, scholarship, leadership, and creativity.

Lord Hague remarked, “I am delighted to honor eight exceptional individuals today, whose achievements and dedication across their fields serve as a personal inspiration. This ceremony celebrates those devoted to service, creativity, scholarship, and leadership, whose work has profoundly impacted the world.”

Sindh Education Department Announces Oxford University Scholarships

The recipients of the honorary degrees included:

  • Lady Elish Angiolini, lawyer, academic, public servant, former Principal of St Hugh’s College, Oxford (2012–2025), and Chair of the Angiolini Inquiry.

  • John Kerry, former US Secretary of State (2013–2017), naval officer, attorney, diplomat, and politician.

  • Dinah Rose, barrister and President of Magdalen College, Oxford.

  • Professor Irene Tracey, CBE, FRS, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and prominent neuroscientist.

  • Professor Sir John Curtice, political scientist, broadcaster, and Professor of Politics at the University of Strathclyde.

  • Christina Lamb, OBE, bestselling author, Chief Foreign Correspondent for The Sunday Times, and co-author of I Am Malala.

  • Dr Dominic Sandbrook, historian, writer, broadcaster, and host of the award-winning podcast The Rest is History.

  • Isabella Tree, conservationist and author, known for her pioneering rewilding work at the Knepp Estate, featured in the 2024 documentary Wilding.

The ceremony celebrated the diverse achievements of the honorands, spanning law, politics, journalism, history, academia, and environmental conservation, highlighting Oxford University’s continued commitment to recognizing global excellence and service.
