Alumni and Legal Experts Weigh In on Khan’s Eligibility

Oxford University Chancellorship Election Draws International Attention Due to Imran Khan’s Candidacy

Controversy Arises as Legal Scrutiny Over Khan’s Eligibility Fuels Debate Amid Pakistani Political Tensions

For the first time, Oxford University’s chancellorship race is entangled in the complexities of Pakistani politics, following the submission of Imran Khan’s candidacy. The university, unprepared for the backlash his entry would generate, now faces legal scrutiny over his eligibility, according to The Times.

The historic position, traditionally held by prominent British establishment figures, has taken a different turn this year with Khan’s candidacy amidst his imprisonment. A legal opinion has been sought to determine whether the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder meets the merit for the role, raising significant concerns within Pakistan. Many of Khan’s supporters believe that a win could improve his chances of release from prison.

National Criminal and Oxford University Chancellorship

Oxford, for the first time, will conduct the chancellorship election through an online vote, with alumni ranking their preferred candidates. The contenders include notable figures like Lord William Hague, Lady Elish Angiolini, Lord Peter Mandelson, Khan, Dr Margaret Casely-Hayford, and Dominic Grieve.

Khan, a graduate of Oxford in 1975, has expressed his desire to “give back” to the university that shaped him. However, since his candidacy was announced, a London barrister was approached by an independent party for legal advice on his eligibility.

While, the role is mostly ceremonial, the election has sparked intense debate, especially with concerns from Pakistan about the political implications. Student opinion at Oxford is also divided, with pro- and anti-Khan camps actively expressing their views.
