Over 200,000 Canadians Demand Revocation of Elon Musk’s Citizenship

WASHINGTON: More than 200,000 Canadians have signed a parliamentary petition calling for the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship, citing his association with former US President Donald Trump. The petition, initiated by author Qualia Reed and sponsored by New Democrat MP Charlie Angus, accuses Musk of undermining Canada’s national interests due to his close ties with Trump.

Musk, originally from South Africa, holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who hails from Saskatchewan. The petition argues that Musk’s support of Trump, who has previously made threats against Canadian sovereignty, justifies the revocation of his citizenship.

The petition claims, “Elon Musk has engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada,” and further accuses him of being “a member of a foreign government attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty.”

While Canadian law allows for the revocation of citizenship in cases of fraud or misrepresentation, political alignment has not historically been a reason for such actions. The petition, which surpassed the required 500 signatures to be considered by Parliament, has already garnered over 203,000 signatures as of early Monday. The petition remains open for signatures until June 20.

If Musk’s citizenship were to be revoked, he would be required to wait 10 years before reapplying. This move would mark an unprecedented case in Canadian legal history.
