Nine Judges Nominated to SHC Constitutional Bench
ISLAMABAD: In a significant development, the Judicial Commission, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, has nominated nine judges for a new constitutional bench of the Sindh High Court. The decision, announced on Monday, follows a majority vote during the commission’s meeting in Islamabad.
The newly-formed constitutional bench will be led by Justice KK Agha, who has also been appointed the head of the constitutional committee. Joining Justice Agha on the bench will be Justice Omar Sial, Justice Muhammad Saleem Jasser, Justice Zulfiqar Ali Sangi, Justice Arbab Ali, Justice Yousaf Ali, Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro, Justice Sana Akram Minhas, and Justice Abdul Mubeen Lakho.
This constitutional bench has been established for a two-month term to address key constitutional matters currently pending before the Sindh High Court.
The decision received widespread support, with a majority of 11 votes in favor of the nominations. However, there was some dissent within the commission, as Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, and the Chief Justice of Sindh High Court expressed disagreement. Chief Justice Afridi refrained from voting, while commission members Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz were absent from the meeting.

The formation of the constitutional bench follows the recent establishment of a constitutional bench for the Supreme Court, approved by the Judicial Commission on November 5. That bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, marked the commission’s first major action since the 26th constitutional amendment and the reorganization of the commission itself.
As the judicial landscape evolves, the appointment of these judges reflects a concerted effort to address pressing constitutional matters in Sindh, with hopes of expediting decisions in a timely and efficient manner.
