New COVID-19 Variant XEC Spreads Globally, Prompting Health Alerts

XEC Detected in 27 Countries, Experts Warn of Increased Transmissibility

A new COVID-19 variant, named XEC, is rapidly spreading across the globe, having been detected in 27 countries, including the UK, US, and China. This hybrid variant merges characteristics from previous Omicron subvariants KS.1.1 and KP.3.3, which were first identified in Germany in June.

Currently, there have been no reported cases of XEC in India; however, health authorities have found the variant in samples from several European countries, such as Poland, Norway, and Portugal. Experts caution that XEC’s increased transmissibility could make it the dominant strain as autumn approaches.

Reports suggest that XEC has new mutations that could enhance its ability to spread. Despite its highly contagious nature, vaccines are anticipated to remain effective in preventing severe illness.

Dr. Eric Topol, a leading epidemiologist, mentioned that XEC is still in the early stages of its spread, and it may take weeks or even months before it results in a notable rise in cases.

The World Health Organization has not yet officially classified the variant, but it is being closely monitored by health experts.
