Need reforms in UNSC to end Gaza, other global clashes, Pakistan suggests
Controversy stirs as Hamas claims Israel declined to take 2 more hostages,
UN_Pakistan has stressed the need to revive the two-state solution to the Palestinian crisis for durable peace in the region at the United Nations,
Speaking in a debate on the contributions of regional mechanisms for peace and security in the Security Council, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, Munir Akram said the two-state solution is the only option for a durable peace in the Holy Land.
He expressed the hope that after the Security Council’s failure, the General Assembly will take action and demand an immediate ceasefire; full, unhindered, and sustainable humanitarian access to the suffering people in Gaza, and ensure that they are not displaced within or outside Gaza.
Speaking about the Security Council’s shortcomings, Munir Akram said these arise mainly due to the veto power of the five permanent members.
He said the Security Council, which has the primary responsibility to promote world peace, has failed to “stop the slaughter in Gaza”, as it also failed in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Pakistani envoy said the Security Council’s failures can be addressed by making it more representative and democratic, by enlarging the voice of the majority of small and medium-sized states, and more accountable through the democratic method of periodic elections.
Earlier,
Hamas claimed that the group had wanted to release two more hostages on humanitarian grounds but that Israel declined to receive them.
Israel described it as “propaganda”. Abu Ubaida, spokesman for Hamas’ armed wing, said it informed Qatar of the group’s intention to release the two additional people on Friday, the same day it freed Americans Judith Tai Ranaan and her daughter Natalie.
In a later statement, Abu Ubaida said Hamas was ready to free the two people on Sunday “using the same procedures” involved in the release of Judith and Natalie.
The Palestinian group captured around 210 people during its deadly assault in southern Israel on October 7. Qatar, which helped mediate Friday’s release, had no immediate comment.
Hamas’ armed wing, the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, has released two U.S. hostages from Gaza — a mother and her daughter — “for humanitarian reasons” in response to Qatari mediation efforts in the war with Israel, its spokesman Abu Ubaida said on Friday.
Hamas says it took about 200 hostages during a deadly Oct. 7 rampage carried out from the Gaza Strip on communities and military bases in southern Israel, part of the biggest attack on the country since the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
Hamas said 50 more are held by other armed groups in the enclave. It said more than 20 hostages have been killed by Israeli air strikes, but has not given any further details.
Abu Ubaida said they released the citizens “for humanitarian reasons, and to prove to the American people and the world that the claims made by (President Joe) Biden and his fascist administration are false and baseless.”
