Article: “NDMA Warns of Consecutive Heat Waves in May and June: What Pakistan Needs to Know”. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan has issued a stark warning about the imminent threat of three heat wave spells expected to hit the country in the coming weeks. This forecast comes as part of the NDMA’s ongoing efforts to prepare and protect citizens from extreme weather conditions.
According to the NDMA’s latest advisory, the first heat wave is projected to commence in the final week of May, followed by two additional spells throughout June. These heat waves are expected to bring rising temperatures across various regions, with potentially severe impacts on public health, agriculture, and daily life.
Health Risks and Precautionary Measures
The NDMA has urged citizens to take necessary precautions to mitigate the health risks associated with extreme heat. People are advised to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and keep an eye on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. The health departments are also on high alert to manage heat-related illnesses.
Dr. Faisal Sultan, an advisor to the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of community awareness. “Heat waves can lead to serious health issues like heatstroke and dehydration. Public awareness and preventive measures are crucial in reducing the health impact of these conditions,” he stated.
Impact on Agriculture
The coming heat waves pose a significant threat to Pakistan’s agricultural sector. With temperatures expected to exceed normal levels, there is a heightened risk of crop failure and reduced yield, particularly affecting wheat and other staple crops. The Ministry of Agriculture has advised farmers to implement water conservation techniques and other measures to protect their crops.
Ali Zafar, a farmer from Punjab, expressed his concerns: “Our crops are already under stress due to unpredictable weather patterns. These heat waves could devastate our harvest, leading to financial losses and food shortages.”
Urban Heat Island Effect
Cities are expected to experience the ‘urban heat island’ effect, where urban areas become significantly warmer than their rural surroundings due to human activities and infrastructure. Major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad are likely to see higher temperatures, exacerbating the effects of the heat waves.
Government Response and Preparedness
In response to the NDMA’s warnings, the government has initiated a series of measures to diminish the impact of the heat waves. Emergency cooling centers are being set up in urban areas, and water distribution points are being established to ensure access to clean drinking water.
The NDMA is also coordinating with provincial disaster management authorities to ensure that all regions are adequately prepared. “Our goal is to minimize the adverse effects of these heat waves through proactive planning and community engagement,” said Lt. General Akhtar Nawaz, Chairman of the NDMA.
Climate Change Concerns
These frequent heat waves are a stark reminder of the broader challenges posed by climate change. Pakistan, despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change impacts. Rising temperatures, shifting weather patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events highlight the urgent need for global and local action to address climate change.
As Pakistan prepares for these extreme heat waves, the NDMA’s warnings serve as a crucial call to action for individuals, communities, and authorities to work together in safeguarding public health and welfare.

What can be done to help a person with sunstroke?
Immediately call for emergency medical assistance (in Pakistan, dial 1122). Move the person in a cool place, under a shade. Wipe the person with a wet cloth or wash the body frequently. Pour normal-temperature water on the head. The goal here is to bring down the person’s body temperature. Give the person ORS or any other hydrating drink in order to rehydrate the body. Take the person to the nearest health centre.
Following these guidelines at individual level
As Pakistan prepares for the estimated heat waves in May and June, individuals and communities must take proactive steps to ensure safety and minimize health risks. Important guidelines include staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using electrolyte drinks if necessary, staying cool by remaining indoors during peak heat, using fans or air conditioning, and wearing light clothing. Protect yourself outdoors by limiting activities to cooler parts of the day, using sunscreen, and wearing hats and sunglasses. Recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses, check on weak individuals such as the elderly and children, maintain a cool environment at home, prepare for power outages with backup plans and emergency kits, follow health advisories, and help neighbors who might need assistance. Following these guidelines can significantly reduce the risks associated with heat waves.
