NDMA Issues Flood Alert as Sutlej River Water Levels Rise
Authorities Urge Vigilance as River Levels Threaten Nearby Homes
Flood-Alert-NDMA-(Special Correspondent/Webdesk) -On Tuesday, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a warning about a potential flood situation in the Sutlej River, cautioning that a low-level flood could occur at Ganda Singhwala in the coming days due to rising water levels and expected rainfall in upstream regions.
River Flow in Sutlej Surges Sharply at Ganda Singhwala
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported a sharp increase in water discharge in the Sutlej River at Ganda Singhwala. Within just one hour, the river flow rose from 28,657 to 33,653 cusecs, raising serious concerns of possible flooding in low-lying nearby areas. Officials are closely monitoring the river levels to track any further rise.
Heavy Rain Predicted in Sutlej and Beas Catchment Areas
The NDMA spokesperson warned that heavy rainfall is expected in the upper catchment areas of the Sutlej and Beas rivers between August 5 and August 7. This could further increase water levels, leading to a higher flood risk in downstream areas.

Indian Dams Near Capacity – Risk of Water Release
The NDMA also provided updates on reservoir levels across the border in India. As of now, the Bhakra Dam is 55% full, and Pong Dam is 56% full. Authorities warn that any release of water from these dams could raise river levels in Punjab, potentially worsening flood conditions.
NDMA Puts Local Authorities on High Alert
Due to the rising threat, the NDMA has ordered local administrations to be on high alert. Emergency plans have been activated, including quick response teams, drainage system checks, and possible evacuation plans for high-risk zones. The public is being urged to follow all emergency guidelines issued by authorities.
Residents and Farmers Urged to Stay Safe
People living near the riverbanks, especially fishermen and farmers, are being asked to stay alert and take all necessary precautions. The NDMA warns that river conditions may change rapidly, and residents should regularly check for weather updates and flood alerts.
