NDMA issues alert for rain, snow in northern regions

NDMA warns of heavy rain, snow, and possible landslides in northern Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), through its National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), has issued a weather alert for northern Pakistan.

From Saturday to Monday, parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to see rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall in higher areas.

NEOC warned that in the mountains, snow and rain could make roads slippery and reduce visibility. There is also a higher chance of landslides and avalanches.

The authority added that rising temperatures during rainfall may speed up glacier melting. This could increase the risk of floods from glacial lakes.

NDMA has advised tourists, travelers and local population to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly through mountainous and landslide-prone areas, and to exercise caution while travelling.

The authority has also directed local administrations and relevant departments to closely monitor vulnerable areas and maintain readiness of emergency response teams to address any potential incidents.
