Punjab unveils tough new law to cripple beggar mafia

Lahore, The Punjab Home Department is taking a decisive step against forced begging with the introduction of a new law targeting the ringleaders of the beggar mafia.

The proposed legislation, currently awaiting cabinet approval, outlines a significant punishment for gang leaders: a 10-year prison sentence coupled with a hefty fine of 20 lakh rupees. Non-payment of the fine will result in an additional three years of incarceration.

This stricter stance reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to dismantling the exploitative network. A spokesperson for the Interior Department emphasized that the new law categorizes forced begging, particularly when it involves children, the elderly, and women, as a serious non-bailable offense.

This initiative comes after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz issued directives to rein in the beggar mafia’s activities in Punjab.
