National Assembly Condemns India’s August 5 Actions, Reaffirms Unwavering Support for Kashmiris
ISLAMABAD: On the observance of Youm-e-Istehsal, the National Assembly of Pakistan unanimously adopted a resolution strongly condemning India’s illegal and unilateral actions taken on August 5, 2019, in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
The resolution, moved by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Senator Amir Muqam, rejected New Delhi’s controversial revocation of Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution—provisions that granted special autonomy to the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.
Lawmakers described India’s actions as a blatant violation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and international law. The House paid tribute to the enduring sacrifices and resilience of the Kashmiri people, reiterating Pakistan’s strong and consistent support for their inalienable right to self-determination.
The resolution also condemned the use of brutal force, arbitrary detentions, and systematic suppression of Kashmiri voices. It called for the immediate release of all political prisoners detained by Indian authorities in the region.
Senator Amir Muqam Decries Human Rights Violations, Demographic Changes in Kashmir
While addressing the House, Senator Amir Muqam strongly criticized India’s continued human rights abuses in IIOJK. He accused the Indian government of attempting demographic engineering in an effort to alter the Muslim-majority status of the region.
Muqam spoke of the tragic human cost of India’s actions, pointing out that thousands of Kashmiri youth have been martyred, leaving behind countless orphans and widows. He emphasized that despite the decades-long military siege and suffering, the people of Kashmir remain steadfast in their resolve and continue to hold Pakistan close to their hearts.

“Despite the oppression, the spirit of Pakistan lives in the hearts of Kashmiris,” he asserted. He further emphasized that India’s revocation of Kashmir’s special status not only violated UNSC resolutions but also breached moral and democratic principles.
Call for International Action
The National Assembly urged the international community to take immediate notice of the dire human rights situation in IIOJK. It called on global organizations and human rights observers to be allowed access to the region to assess the situation firsthand. The resolution reaffirmed that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute must be resolved in accordance with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and the relevant UNSC resolutions.
India’s controversial constitutional move on August 5, 2019, has since drawn widespread criticism from Pakistan and international human rights bodies. Pakistan continues to observe Youm-e-Istehsal annually to spotlight the ongoing military siege and illegal measures imposed by Indian forces in the region.
