Murree Tops Punjab Literacy Rankings at 84.3%

A clear gap emerged between urban and rural districts in educational development.

LAHORE: Punjab released district rankings according to literacy rate, after which Murree emerged as the top city with 84.3 percent literacy rate in Pakistan, reported on Saturday.

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) released the statistics for education policy and Rawalpindi came second with 83.2 percent and Jhelum is third with 82.1 percent, Gujranwala with 81.2 percent, Lahore 80.7 percent, and Faisalabad 68.7 percent. South Punjab still lags behind as the literacy rate in Multan recorded 60.2%, Rajanpur is far less with only 36.1 percent literacy rate.

A clear gap emerged between urban and rural districts in educational development. It is necessary to mention here that Pakistan’s national literacy rate has reached 63 percent, reflecting a modest increase of three percentage points over the past five years Provincial data shows Punjab leading with a literacy rate of 68 percent, while Balochistan continues to lag at 49 percent.

The survey also recorded a slight improvement in education access, with the proportion of out-of-school children declining from 30 percent to 28 percent.
