Moscow Metro Marks 90 Years of Service, Innovation, and Expansion

Moscow Metro Transports 2.7 Billion Passengers in 2024 Amid Major Modernization

ISLAMABAD/MOSCOW – The Moscow Metro, one of the world’s busiest and most expansive urban transit systems, has celebrated its 90th anniversary, marking nearly a century of innovation, infrastructure growth, and dedicated public service. Since its inauguration in 1935, the network has grown from a single 11.5-kilometer line to a sprawling system with more than 550 kilometers of track and 302 stations.

In 2024 alone, the Metro transported over 2.7 billion passengers, averaging 8 million trips per weekday. The system has consistently adapted to the changing demands of urban mobility, with modernization efforts ensuring over 75 percent of trains in operation today are new-generation models. These trains feature advanced technologies such as automated speed control, open gangways, and enhanced safety systems.

Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, Maksim Liksutov, praised the Metro’s historical legacy and its continued commitment to excellence.

“The opening of the Metro in 1935 was a historic event for our capital and the entire country. Even then, workers and builders set the highest standards for passenger service. Today, in line with the goals set by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, we continue to uphold that standard,” he stated.

He noted that more than 65,000 people are currently employed by the Moscow Metro, helping to ensure a safe and reliable experience for millions of passengers each day.

“I want to thank every employee for their dedication and wish them continued success,” he added.

The Metro’s ability to operate at intervals as short as 90 seconds during peak hours has been made possible through infrastructure upgrades and digital integration. The introduction of contactless ticketing, smart cards, and biometric payment options has streamlined access and improved commuter convenience, with most daily trips now utilizing digital fare systems.

To commemorate the milestone, the city organized exhibitions and events showcasing the Metro’s evolution. Historic train models were restored and displayed alongside archival materials, offering a glimpse into the system’s storied past and its vision for the future.
