Mohsin Naqvi Announces One Month of Free Public Transport in Islamabad

Islamabad Commuters Get a Month of Free Rides as Government Steps In to Soften the Blow of Rising Fuel Prices

Islamabad – (Web Desk) – In a welcome relief for the people of Islamabad, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced that all public transport in the capital will be completely free of charge for the next 30 days.

Making the announcement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Naqvi shared that this initiative comes directly on the directions of Prime Minister, and will kick off from tomorrow. The Ministry of Interior will be covering the entire cost of this relief effort, which amounts to Rs. 350 million.

This announcement comes just a day after the government revealed a significant hike in fuel prices — a steep 43% rise in petrol rates and an even sharper 55% increase in high-speed diesel (HSD) — a move that left many citizens worried about their daily commuting expenses.

The federal government’s move follows a similar step taken by the Punjab government, which had already announced free public transport services across all cities in the province as part of a broader relief package for the public.

Together, these initiatives reflect an effort by the authorities to ease the financial burden on ordinary citizens in the wake of rising fuel costs.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, while unveiling the package, said that financial assistance would be provided to protect agriculture, food, and farmers. A subsidy of Rs 100 per liter per acre on diesel will be given to farmers.

Under the relief package, citizens will not have to purchase tickets while traveling on Orange Line Train, Metro Bus Service, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Bus. The government has also decided to provide subsidies to motorcyclists, under which every registered bike owner will receive Rs 100 subsidy on 20 liters of fuel.
