Millions Attend Khamenei Funeral Prayers in Tehran

Tehran Hosts Funeral Prayers for Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei

Tehran: (Web Desk) – Funeral prayers for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were offered in Tehran on Sunday, as large crowds gathered in the capital to pay their final respects.

Thousands of mourners assembled at the Grand Mosalla complex and along major roads, while Sunday was declared a public holiday across Iran for the funeral ceremonies. Khamenei’s coffin, along with the coffins of four family members killed in the February 28 airstrikes, was placed for public viewing.

State television said prayers over the body of the late leader were scheduled in the morning, while his coffin was expected to leave the Grand Mosalla complex later in the evening ahead of a major procession through Tehran on Monday.

Following the Tehran procession, the funeral arrangements include the transfer of Khamenei’s body to Qom on Tuesday and then to the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala on Wednesday. He is expected to be buried in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday.

Iranian authorities have imposed extensive security measures and issued warnings over possible crowd congestion as they expect millions of people to participate in the ceremonies. With temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius, organisers have also arranged water sprays and other measures for mourners.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the massive turnout reflected Khamenei’s standing among the Iranian people, while delegations from Hamas, Hezbollah, Yemen’s Houthis and Palestinian Islamic Jihad attended the mourning events.
