Migrant Boat Sinks off Greece, Two Dead

Two Dead as Migrant Boat Sinks off Greek Coast

GREECE: (Web Desk) – A boat carrying more than 50 migrants sank off the Greek coast near the island of Ikaria, resulting in the deaths of a woman and a young boy, while three others remain missing, the coastguard said on Sunday.

Authorities confirmed that 50 migrants were rescued and are receiving care. A coastguard vessel remains at the scene as rescue operations continue, with divers and additional rescue teams expected to join despite strong winds complicating efforts.

A overloaded boat sinks in Nigeria’s Niger State, killing 60.

Ikaria lies close to Turkey’s western coastline, a common departure point for migrants attempting to reach the European Union. Many others attempt the longer and more dangerous journey from Libya to Crete.

Such crossings frequently turn deadly; earlier this month, 17 migrants were found dead off Crete, with 15 others reported missing. According to the UN refugee agency, 107 people have died or gone missing off Greece in 2025 alone, while the International Organization for Migration estimates that nearly 33,000 migrants have died or disappeared in the Mediterranean since 2014.
