Meta to Maintain Political Ad Ban After Election Day
Existing Ads Can Continue with Limited Edits; New Ads Restricted to Allow Fact-Checking
Meta Platforms will extend its suspension of new political ads following the U.S. election, with the restriction expected to last until later this week, the Facebook parent company announced in a blog post on Monday.
In light of widespread misinformation during the last presidential election, tech companies are keeping a close watch this year.
During this period, Meta will prohibit new political ads. However, ads that have already run at least once before the ban will continue to be displayed, though editing capabilities will be limited.
Meta’s policy is consistent with prior years, emphasizing that the final phase of the election may not allow enough time to thoroughly fact-check new political ad claims.
Last year, Meta also restricted political campaigns and other regulated sectors from using its generative AI advertising tools.
