Meta Announces Major WhatsApp Update to Limit Spam Messages

Meta stated that testing of the new system will begin in the coming weeks in several countries.

MENLO PARK — Meta has announced a significant change to WhatsApp aimed at curbing the growing issue of spam messages, a move expected to be welcomed by users worldwide.

The company revealed that it will soon introduce monthly messaging limits for both individual users and business accounts, specifically targeting those who send messages to people who do not respond.

WhatsApp, originally designed for personal communication, has evolved over time to include groups, communities, and business messaging. While these additions have expanded the platform’s utility, they have also resulted in users receiving an overwhelming number of messages—many of which are unsolicited.

To address this, Meta will implement a new limit on the number of messages users can send to non-responsive recipients. However, messages that receive a reply will not count towards this limit.

For example, if you meet someone and send them three messages without receiving a reply, those messages will count toward your monthly limit.

The company has not disclosed the exact number of messages allowed under the new system, as various thresholds are currently being tested.

When a user—either individual or business—approaches the message limit, a pop-up notification will appear within the app, alerting them to the count. This is intended to prevent users from being blocked due to excessive messaging.

Meta stated that testing of the new system will begin in the coming weeks in several countries. Most regular users are unlikely to hit the messaging cap, and Meta emphasized that the change is designed primarily to protect users from spam, rather than disrupt normal messaging activity.

The update represents another step in WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance user privacy and experience while addressing the platform’s growing use for business and promotional content.
