Met Office predicts widespread rain, snow across Pakistan
PMD forecasts widespread rain, thunderstorms, and heavy snowfall across northern Pakistan, warning travelers to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
PMD – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast for widespread rain and snowfall in northern and other parts of the country over the coming days. A shallow westerly wave is expected to reach the upper regions on Friday, gradually strengthening from January 20 and affecting most areas from January 21 onwards.
According to the PMD, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, and Galliyat will see rain and thunderstorms, along with light to moderate snowfall from January 16 to 20, with some intermittent breaks.
From January 20 to 23, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are likely across Islamabad, Punjab’s Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sahiwal, Multan, Faisalabad, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Bahawalpur divisions, as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts including Peshawar, Hazara, Malakand, Mardan, Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan.
Northern hilly areas such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Murree, Galliyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Haveli, and Rawalakot are expected to experience heavy snowfall from the night of January 20 through January 23, with occasional gaps.
Meanwhile, rain and thunderstorms are forecast in Balochistan districts including Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Killa Abdullah, Killa Saifullah, Nushki, Harnai, Zhob, Kalat, Barkhan, Sibi, Loralai, Musakhel, Turbat, Gawadar, Jiwani, Lasbella, Kech, Awaran, Chaghi, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Washuk, and Kharan on January 21-22.
In Sindh, cities such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Jacobabad, Naushero Feroz, Kashmore, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, and Ghotki are likely to see rain with occasional breaks on January 22-23.
“Moderate to heavy snowfall in (Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Noushki, Harnai, Zhob) during the period,” the PMD said.
Heavy snowfall may cause road closures and slippery conditions in Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galliyat, Neelum valley, Bagh, Poonch, Haveli, Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Killa Abdullah, Killa Saifullah, Nushki, Harnai and Zhob, according to the PMD.
There is a possibility of landslides and avalanche in hilly areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir during this period.
“Tourists are advised to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary traveling during the forecast period,” it said.

“Fog condition is likely to diminish in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and upper Sindh during the wet spell. Day time temperatures are likely to drop significantly during the period.”
