Messi and Suarez Shine as Inter Miami Beats Montreal 4-2 in MLS Thriller

“Unfortunately, the win is overshadowed by the injuries,” Mascherano said.

MIAMI – Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez delivered a vintage performance on Wednesday night, each scoring twice to lead Inter Miami to a 4-2 victory over Montreal in Major League Soccer action.

Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute and later assisted Suarez’s first goal in the 68th, giving Miami a commanding 2-0 lead. The Uruguayan star struck again just three minutes later, before Montreal’s Dante Sealy responded in the 74th minute.

The Argentine legend sealed the win with his second goal in the 87th minute, though Montreal’s Victor Loturi managed a late consolation goal two minutes into stoppage time.

The win marked a crucial turnaround for Miami, who had gone winless in their last four matches. The result propelled them to sixth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 7 wins, 5 draws, and 3 losses from 15 games. Montreal, meanwhile, continues to languish at the bottom of the table with a dismal 1-10-5 record.

“We had to take responsibility for the poor results,” Suarez said post-match. “It’s a matter of correcting to regain confidence. This win means a lot—we need to build on this.”

Despite the victory, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano expressed concern over injuries to key defenders Gonzalo Lujan, Tomas Aviles (Toto), and Jordi Alba.

“Unfortunately, the win is overshadowed by the injuries,” Mascherano said. “With Gonzalo and Jordi, it seems muscular. Toto’s ankle swelled up after a stomp, but he wanted to continue. We’ll assess all three tomorrow.”

Philadelphia Union Hold League Lead with Dramatic Win

In other MLS action, league leader Philadelphia Union staged a late comeback to defeat Toronto FC 2-1. After Norway’s Ola Brynhildsen put Toronto ahead in the 75th minute, the Union struck back with goals from Nathan Harriel in the 86th and Germany’s Kai Wagner in stoppage time.

Philadelphia now leads the league with 33 points and a 10-3-3 record. Their closest challengers—Cincinnati, Nashville, and Columbus—all failed to secure wins, settling for draws in their respective matches.

As the MLS season heats up, Inter Miami’s star-powered resurgence could be a storyline to watch—especially with Messi and Suarez in top form.
