Pakistan Celebrates National Markhor Day, Highlights Conservation Efforts
Islamabad— Pakistan is celebrating National Markhor Day today, marking a moment of pride for the nation as it honors its national animal, the Markhor. Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid, emphasized the importance of this day during a press briefing.
“Today is a day of joy for our nation as we celebrate National Markhor Day,” Khurshid stated. “The Markhor is our national animal and a vital inhabitant of our natural environment.”
Khurshid highlighted Pakistan’s rich natural resources, including diverse climates, wildlife, glaciers, and scenic locations. She pointed out that Gilgit-Baltistan alone is home to 12 different species of goats, with the Markhor being a significant part of the region’s biodiversity.
“The Markhor is not only a beautiful and impressive animal but also a source of income for the people living in mountainous areas,” Khurshid said. “Each year, only 12 animals are allowed to be hunted out of a population of over 4,500.”
