Mamata Banerjee has offered to hand over the investigation of the doctor’s Rape and Murder case
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that a CBI investigation into the doctor’s rape and murder is possible if the family requests it.
Kolkata(Staff Reporter): Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Monday afternoon that the police have until Sunday to solve the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College last week. If they fail, the CBI will take over the investigation. Ms. Banerjee, who praised the state police as “the best in the world,” set the deadline amid significant political pressure from the BJP.
If more suspects are involved and not all are arrested by Sunday, we will hand the case over to the CBI,” the Chief Minister said after meeting with the victim’s family. She also took a jab at the federal agency, which reports to the BJP, by adding, “We will hand it over despite their low success rate,” referencing cases like the theft of Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel Prize, where “justice has yet to be served.
Last week, the Chief Minister also mentioned that she has no objections to the CBI, which is under the BJP-led central government, taking over the case, especially if that is what the protesting medical professionals are demanding.
After Ms. Banerjee set the deadline, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal detailed the measures being taken to solve the crime. “We are confident that within the next four or five days, if there are additional perpetrators, we will be able to arrest them,” he said. “We have set up a helpline where doctors can provide information and communicate anonymously if they have any suspicions.
“We are maintaining communication with the family and will continue to update them on our progress. If, despite our efforts, the family remains dissatisfied, we will proceed as Ms. Banerjee has outlined,” he said.
The doctor was discovered on Friday morning in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital.
The preliminary autopsy report revealed that the victim was bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private areas, as well as from her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.
Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who regularly visited the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the crime. The incident has led to nationwide protests by doctors and political opposition.
According to a police officer investigating the case, Sanjoy Roy returned home, went to bed, and washed his clothes the next morning to destroy evidence.
“This morning, Dr. Sandip Ghosh told the media, ‘Students are being incited to ensure my removal. I want the accused to be punished. I am being defamed and have not made the remarks attributed to me. The girl who died was like a daughter to me. As a parent, I am resigning.'”
Earlier, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized Dr. Ghosh, calling for his suspension. “His misleading statements and careless attitude following this tragic event reveal his disregard for the victim,” Mr. Adhikari posted on X.
In response, doctors from hospitals across India have declared an indefinite strike.
Doctors in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and other cities have announced that all elective services will be suspended until the investigation is concluded. The protesters are also calling for enhanced security measures for all medical personnel.
