Majority of Americans Support U.S. Recognition of Palestinian State, Survey Finds

In addition, 60% of Americans believe that Israeli actions in Gaza have been excessive.

WASHINGTON: A recent survey conducted by international news agency Reuters reveals that most American citizens favor the United States officially recognizing a Palestinian state.

According to the survey, 59% of Americans support U.S. recognition of Palestine, while 33% oppose it. Support is particularly strong among Democrats, with 80% in favor, compared to 41% of Republicans. Notably, about half of Republican respondents (53%) are against this move.

The survey highlights a significant disconnect between public opinion and President Donald Trump’s stance, as he has refused to recognize a Palestinian state.

In addition, 60% of Americans believe that Israeli actions in Gaza have been excessive. This comes amid recent recognition of Palestine by several Western countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Australia, which prompted strong reactions from Israel.

On a hopeful note, the recent ceasefire agreement has raised prospects for peace in Gaza. The survey shows that 51% of Americans believe that if peace holds, President Trump deserves “significant credit” for the achievement.

Analysts suggest that while the peace process in Gaza remains uncertain, the survey indicates a slight increase in approval of Trump’s foreign policy, which now stands at 38%.
