Major Changes Expected in UK Permanent Residency Policy for Refugees

London: The United Kingdom is expected to introduce significant changes to its policy on granting permanent residency to refugees.
According to British media reports, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce revisions to the refugee policy, under which refugees will now initially receive only temporary protection.
Under the proposed changes, refugees will have to wait up to 20 years to become eligible for permanent residency. These measures are being implemented to reduce the number of refugees arriving in the UK.

Currently, refugees are granted a five-year status, after which they can apply for permanent residency. Under the new system, the initial status will be reduced to just 2.5 years. After this period, the refugee’s status will be reviewed. If their home country is deemed safe, refugees may be returned, and to obtain permanent residency, they must maintain their status continuously for 20 years.
British media also report that new restrictions will be placed on refugees bringing their family members to the UK. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to officially announce these reforms tomorrow.
