Law Minister Nazir Tarar: Supreme Court Ruling Poses No Threat to Government

The Law Minister also mentioned that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Senate election was not addressed in the order.
Islamabad: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar has assured that the recent Supreme Court decision does not pose a threat to the government. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Tarar emphasized that the Supreme Court’s judgment, which suggested seats should have gone to the Sunni Ittehad Council, will be thoroughly studied.
Minister Tarar highlighted that although PTI was not a party in the case, the court’s brief judgment indicated the Sunni Ittehad Council sought relief. The Minister expressed concerns that the judgment may have reinterpreted constitutional articles 51 and 106, suggesting that new interpretations have been written rather than the articles being clarified.
Tarar criticized the judgment for raising many questions and suggested that well-crafted decisions typically avoid such scrutiny. He acknowledged the public’s right to opinion and criticism under constitutional and legal frameworks and noted that this decision will likely remain a topic of debate.
Despite the ruling, Tarar reaffirmed the government’s stability, supported by a majority of 208 or 209 members. He stated that affected parties must decide on seeking a revision of the judgment and questioned the legal basis of the court’s summary judgment.
Tarar expressed concern that the court system is becoming increasingly entangled in political cases, diverting from its focus on the common man. He stressed that judges should adhere to the constitution and law’s intended purposes.

The Law Minister also mentioned that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Senate election was not addressed in the order. He assured that the Election Commission and other institutions would review the court’s directive, and there might be further petitions.
Tarar concluded by emphasizing that the government coalition maintains a clear majority in both the federation and provinces. He indicated that the ruling will not significantly impact the National Assembly’s party position, nor will it affect Balochistan and Sindh, which had single seats and no direct link to PTI.
