Law Minister Addresses PTI on £190 Million Case and Imran Khan’s Sentence
ISLAMABAD: Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the £190 million case and the 14-year prison sentence of PTI founder Imran Khan, urging the party’s leadership to separate judicial decisions from political issues.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Tarar stated that the matter at hand is purely legal and emphasized that the government does not have the authority to issue an executive order regarding the case. “The government is not in a position to issue an executive order in the £190 million case,” he said, adding that the issue is a legal one that should not be politicized.
Tarar also pointed out that there is one individual who holds the power to potentially change Khan’s sentence: President Asif Ali Zardari. The law minister explained that clemency requests are submitted to the president, who holds the constitutional authority to grant pardons. “If Imran Khan submits a mercy petition to President Zardari, the president could grant him a pardon,” Tarar noted.
In his role as a law expert, Tarar refrained from offering an opinion on whether Khan should receive clemency, but highlighted the legal framework that governs such matters. Citing Article 45 of Pakistan’s Constitution, he explained that the president has the power to grant clemency if the petition is deemed deserving. “There are judicial precedents on this,” he added. “If a person submits a mercy plea to the president and the president finds the individual deserving of clemency, they have the right to grant a pardon.”
