Director Lahore Zoo, Azim Zafar, assured that the zoo is ready for reopening, with remaining tasks that can be completed post-opening without disrupting visitors.
LAHORE: The long-awaited reopening of Lahore Zoo, which has been closed for seven months due to a major resurfacing project, is under consideration for Eid. The final decision will be made by the senior provincial minister.
The zoo, closed since November 2023, underwent a comprehensive renovation project initiated by then Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, with an allocated budget exceeding Rs 1.83 billion. The refurbishment, initially slated for completion by January 31, included extensive upgrades and the introduction of new animal species.
Lahore Zoo, an autonomous institution funding its own expenses, has faced financial constraints despite having reserve funds. Currently, 90% of the renovation work is complete. The zoo now boasts new inhabitants, including Oryx, Chiltan Markhor, Sindh Ibex, Pattas Monkey, Spring Buck, Blessbok, Sable, and various bird species such as parrots, hawks, and songbirds. However, the anticipated arrival of an elephant has been scrapped, though a promised panda by the caretaker chief minister has yet to materialize. Other new features, including a tunnel safari and hologram displays, have been completed.
