Lahore High Court Bans Polluting Generators in ‘Green Lockdown’ Zones to Combat Smog

Lahore High Court Enforces Ban on Smoke-Emitting Generators in ‘Green Lockdown’ Zones

To tackle air pollution, the Lahore High Court has prohibited the use of smoke-emitting commercial generators in areas designated as ‘green lockdown’ zones. Justice Shahid Karim, addressing multiple citizen petitions, including one by Haroon Farooq aimed at reducing smog, ordered that pollution control devices must be installed on commercial generators within seven days. Generators found without these devices are to be sealed until compliance.

The court also instructed authorities to clear encroachments in high-pollution zones, aiming to ease congestion and enhance air quality. Commending the government’s current initiatives and the efforts of the Director General of Environment, the court noted that these actions contribute to the ongoing fight against pollution. The court order also highlighted the distribution of superseeds to farmers to discourage crop burning, as stated by the public prosecutor.

Additionally, the Lahore Division commissioner has been directed to provide a report on the operations of Kasur’s tanneries within 15 days. Meanwhile, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) DG has been instructed to implement recommendations from an inquiry regarding underpass renovations. The case is scheduled for further hearing on Friday.
