KP Governor Kundi calls Faiz Hamid’s verdict strengthening of accountability

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has said that the verdict against former Director-General ISI Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hamid will further strengthen the process of accountability in the country. In an interview on Hum News‘ program Subh Se Agay on Friday, the Governor emphasised that the conviction for political interference and other crimes sends a clear message.

“The trial against Faiz Hamid was not a matter of a few days or weeks; it spanned months,” Kundi said. He added that such a decisive accountability process within the military itself is a robust and positive sign. “This decision will deter illegal activities in the future,” he asserted.

The Governor linked effective accountability to national stability, warning, “Until the system of reward and punishment is set right, affairs will not improve.” He pointedly referenced the events of May 9, stating, “If the perpetrators of May 9 are not punished, more significant incidents could occur in the future.”

On Political Dialogue and Party Bans

While commenting on the political landscape, Kundi expressed a principled stance against banning political parties. “We are not in favor of imposing a ban on any political party,” he clarified. However, he added a caveat, “But when a political party forces the situation itself, what can the government do?” He stressed that consulting with convicted individuals is no way to run a country, a clear reference to certain political consultations.

Drawing historical parallels, he noted, “Other political parties have faced difficult times in the past, but none resorted to such actions,” implying a distinction in current political conduct.

On Provincial-Federal Relations

Regarding the province’s administrative situation, he clarified that the imposition of Governor’s Rule is contingent on the actions of the provincial government. “The entire matter of Governor’s Rule depends on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government. If the KP government cooperates with the federation, then everything is fine,” he explained.

He reaffirmed Parliament as the primary forum for political resolution, stating, “In politics, the path for dialogue is through Parliament alone.”
