Kohli Smashes Century as India Declare Against Australia in Perth Test

Perth: Virat Kohli silenced his critics with a spectacular century against Australia, leading India to declare their second innings at 487-6 in the first Test at Perth on Sunday. The declaration came after Kohli’s milestone, giving India an imposing 533-run lead heading into the fourth day.

The 36-year-old batsman, under increasing pressure after a dry spell of Test centuries, showed his class in a brilliant display of form. Having managed only two Test centuries in the past five years, Kohli’s performance had been under scrutiny, especially after a dismal series against New Zealand, where he averaged just 15. His struggles continued in the first innings at Perth, where he fell for just five runs. However, Kohli responded in the best possible way, returning to form with a fluent knock.

Kohli came to the crease when Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed for 25. After a cautious start, he settled in and reached his half-century, taking full advantage of the scoring opportunities. With his trademark elegance, Kohli struck eight boundaries and two sixes, completing his 30th Test century off 143 balls.

This century was particularly significant for Kohli as it marked his first Test ton since July 2023, when he scored against the West Indies in Port of Spain. His knock on Sunday not only showcased his skill but also provided India with a dominant position in the match, leaving Australia with a monumental task ahead to save the Test.

India’s declaration, led by Kohli’s inspired performance, has placed the visitors firmly in control of the opening Test, with Australia now facing a steep challenge to make a comeback.
