Key Indian Player in Doubt Ahead of Pakistan Clash

With the India-Pakistan rivalry set to reignite in less than 48 hours, every tactical piece matters.

ISLAMABAD: India’s preparations for their high-stakes Super Fours showdown against Pakistan have hit a potential snag, with all-rounder Axar Patel emerging as an injury concern following a nasty fall during their final group-stage match against Oman in Abu Dhabi.

The incident occurred in the 15th over of Oman’s chase, when Axar sprinted in from mid-off to grab a swirling catch off Hammad Mirza. In a dramatic moment, the ball slipped through his hands and the left-armer lost his balance, crashing head-first into the turf. He was seen clutching his head and did not return to the field after receiving treatment.

Axar Patel bowled just one over in the match, conceding four runs, as India gave their fringe bowlers a chance en route to a 21-run victory. While fielding coach T Dilip later claimed Axar was “fine,” the short turnaround before Sunday’s clash in Dubai leaves little room for recovery.

Axar’s absence could disrupt India’s preferred spin-heavy strategy, especially in Dubai, where they’ve consistently relied on a three-spinner setup. He is also handy with the bat which poses further questions for his potential replacement.

With the India-Pakistan rivalry set to reignite in less than 48 hours, every tactical piece matters. Axar’s quickfire 26 off 13 balls against Oman highlighted his value as a middle-order enforcer and a reliable spin option. His absence against Pakistan could be a significant loss as he finished with two wickets for 18 runs when these sides met earlier in Group A.

For Pakistan, the uncertainty around Axar Patel could offer a strategic edge. But in a fixture where form often takes a backseat to fire, expect drama, intensity, and a few surprises, regardless of who takes the field.
