Karachi board bans abaya removal at girls’ exams

Karachi Exam Board Stands Firm on Students' Dignity and Religious Rights

BSEK – (Web Desk) – The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has stepped in to protect the dignity of female students during matric examinations. Chairman Ghulam Hussain Sohoo has issued firm instructions to all examination centres across Karachi, making it clear that no girl should be asked to remove her abaya or veil while appearing in her exams.

The decision came after several students raised concerns about being asked to take off their coverings at certain centres. Taking the matter seriously, Chairman Sohoo made it absolutely clear that such a practice will not be tolerated, and anyone found violating this directive will face strict consequences.

The chairman emphasized that wearing an abaya or veil alongside a school uniform reflects deep cultural and religious values that deserve full respect and must never be compromised.

He also pointed out that there have been zero complaints of cheating from girls’ examination centres, making such intrusive measures completely unjustified in the first place.

Adding another layer of assurance, Chairman Sohoo confirmed that no male invigilators will be assigned to examination centres meant for female candidates, ensuring a comfortable and respectful environment for all girls during their exams.

He emphasised that the dignity and respect of students would not be compromised under any circumstances.

The chairman said that any report of mistreatment or undue pressure on females would be dealt with firmly, stressing that safeguarding students’ rights remained a priority during the examination process.

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi, established in 1950, is responsible for organising and regulating secondary school examinations in the city, including matriculation exams for classes nine and ten.

The announcement comes amid ongoing examinations across Karachi, with authorities seeking to ensure a fair and respectful environment for all matriculation candidates.
