Kangana Ranaut and Javed Akhtar Settle Legal Dispute with Out-of-Court Agreement
MUMBAI – Indian actress Kangana Ranaut and veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar have reached an amicable resolution in their prolonged legal dispute, agreeing to withdraw their respective lawsuits against each other. The two made the announcement on social media, marking the end of a two-year legal battle.
Ranaut shared the news on her Instagram story, expressing her gratitude for Akhtar’s “graciousness” during the mediation process. “Today, Javed Ji and I have resolved our legal matter (defamation case) through mediation. He has been very gracious and has also agreed to write songs for my upcoming directorial project,” she wrote, alongside a photo of the two.
The conflict began in 2020 when Akhtar filed a defamation suit against Ranaut, accusing her of making derogatory statements about him during an interview following the tragic death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. In the interview, Ranaut had claimed that Akhtar had threatened her and demanded an apology from her regarding her comments about Bollywood filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and his family. She recounted feeling intimidated and emotionally distressed during an alleged meeting with Akhtar.
In response, Akhtar denied the allegations, stating in court that Ranaut’s claims were false and accusing her of spreading lies. He clarified that the meeting in question was about the agenda, not the personal matters she described.

Ranaut, in turn, filed a counter-complaint against Akhtar, accusing him of extortion and violating her privacy. Despite the intense back-and-forth, both parties have now agreed to put the dispute behind them and settle their legal issues outside of court.
With the legal conflict behind them, the two are now moving forward with their professional relationship, with Akhtar set to contribute to Ranaut’s upcoming directorial project.
