Kane Williamson Scores Half-Century in Test Return; NZ Collapse Follows

Greaves finished with impressive figures of 2-18, also having contributed to the early dismissal of Conway.

Christchurch: Kane Williamson marked his return to Test cricket with a composed 52 on Tuesday before his dismissal triggered a New Zealand batting collapse on day one of the first Test against the West Indies.

The West Indies seized control in the middle session, taking four quick wickets to leave New Zealand at 128-5 at tea, with Tom Blundell on 16 and Michael Bracewell yet to score.

Williamson, playing his first Test in a year, walked to the crease earlier than expected after opener Devon Conway was dismissed on the third ball of the match. In swing-friendly conditions, he partnered with Tom Latham for a 93-run stand for the second wicket. Williamson’s disciplined batting ended when he edged Justin Greaves to Alex Lim at second slip.

Following Williamson’s departure, Latham fell for 24, and Rachin Ravindra was bowled by Jayden Seales for three, reducing New Zealand from 94-1 to 103-4. Blundell and Will Young began rebuilding, adding 17 for the fifth wicket before Young, on 14, fell to Johann Layne, caught by Greaves.

Greaves finished with impressive figures of 2-18, also having contributed to the early dismissal of Conway.
