Kalabagh Dam is Crucial for the State, Says KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur

Pakistan has done very little to prepare for natural disasters,” Gandapur noted.

Islamabad – Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, has emphasized the urgent need for the construction of the Kalabagh Dam, calling it essential for the survival and prosperity of the state. He urged that any concerns surrounding the project should be addressed through dialogue.

Speaking to the media after a party meeting at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad, Gandapur said, “We hesitate to even name some dams, but the reality is that the lack of dam construction has led to devastating damage from floods and heavy rains. Kalabagh Dam is necessary for the state, and we are ready to contribute our share. Other provinces must also come forward so that the project can be realized.”

The chief minister acknowledged longstanding delays in dam construction, which, according to him, have caused significant damage across the country. He stressed that concerns regarding Kalabagh Dam should be resolved through open discussions, adding that the provincial government is already working on building dams independently to mitigate future risks.

“Pakistan has done very little to prepare for natural disasters,” Gandapur noted. “Neither have dams been constructed at the required pace. Last year, we completed six dams. The Gomal Zam Dam has already proven its effectiveness by reducing flood-related damages, and now we are working on building more dams across various districts.”

He also shared details of ongoing projects, including the Jabba Dam, being built to protect Peshawar, and the construction of a protective wall in Budhni to prevent flooding.

Commenting on recent weather events, the chief minister said a cloudburst in Buner was not linked to deforestation, but rather a result of rising temperatures. “Cloudbursts are now occurring due to heat-related atmospheric changes and can happen anywhere,” he said.

Gandapur’s remarks have once again brought the long-debated Kalabagh Dam project into the national spotlight, as Pakistan continues to grapple with water scarcity, climate change, and infrastructure challenges.
