Justice Yahya Afridi Sworn in as 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan

Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal): Justice Yahya Afridi is set to take the oath as Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) in a formal ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr today.

President Asif Ali Zardari will preside over the oath-taking of the newly appointed Chief Justice, who will serve a three-year term as Pakistan’s 30th Chief Justice. Justice Afridi steps into the role following the retirement of former CJP Qazi Faez Isa on October 25.

This appointment is significant as Afridi is the first Chief Justice to be appointed under Articles 175A(3), 177, and 179 of the Constitution after the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

Oath Ceremony Held
Justice Yahya Afridi officially took the oath as Chief Justice of Pakistan during a ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad, where President Asif Zardari administered the oath.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and all sitting Supreme Court judges. Justice Afridi is expected to serve in this capacity for the next three years under the recently enacted 26th Constitutional Amendment.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur was also among the attendees. The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the formal announcement of Justice Afridi’s appointment. In line with the 26th Constitutional Amendment, a parliamentary committee selected Justice Afridi as Pakistan’s 30th Chief Justice.

The oath-taking event saw the presence of the Prime Minister, military chiefs, and members of Parliament, with President Zardari formally swearing in Yahya Afridi as the successor to former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa.
